Top Tips for Internet Security

1.       Stop viruses before they get to you. New viruses are emerging every day. Use anti-virus software and check daily that it's actually updating itself & therefore giving you the best protection.

2.       Know the name of your anti-virus software so that "pop-up screens claiming your pc is infected  or  your pc doesn't have anti-virus protection can't mislead you.

3.       Protect your computer with a firewall and keep it updated. A firewall will prevent hackers, viruses and malware from getting access to your computer. It will also prevent malicious software from accessing the Internet.

4.       Keep your operating system and software applications updated. Most venders provide regular updates for their software programs to patch security vulnerabilities.

5.       When you leave a website make certain you are completely logged out. Simply closing the browser isn't enough. You need to use the “Log Off button to securely end your session with that site.

6.       Your internet browser may ask you if you want it to remember your user name and password for next time. While this may seem convenient, it is also an easy way for thieves to obtain your log in information.

7.       Use complex passwords made up of a combination of letters and numbers to access both your pc & internet websites. Don't share your passwords or keep them written on sticky notes near your computer.

8.       Stay informed of the latest internet threats and how they can affect you & your pc.

9.       Avoid file sharing sites to download music; films etc, because some of these programs will share everything on your pc by default which means anyone using that program located anywhere in the world could access your pc & steal your personal information

10.   Disconnect your computer from the Internet when you're not using the web. This will lessen your chance of someone attempting to access your computer through the Internet.

11.   If you bank online be aware that thieves will do whatever it takes to steal your information. Financial institutions will never send you emails asking you to provide them with your account information or password.

12.   Make certain that everyone in your family or place of business understands and follows established security procedures. Just as a chain is only as strong as its weakest link, so is your Internet security as strong as the people working together to keep it safe.

13.   Never enter your credit card information before checking to make sure that the site is secure. The URL should always begin with https:// and there should be a lock icon in your browser. This may be in the lower right hand corner of the status bar or in the address bar at the top depending on your specific browser.

14.   Know the online companies you're dealing with and only do business with well-known and reputable sites. Never click email links that offer special deals on anything, no matter how attractive the offer. Chances are it's from a bogus site set up to steal your credit card and other personal information.

15.   Back up your computer on a regular basis. Keep copies of all your important files on a separate external hard drive or flash USB pen-drive Guard your credit card information.

16.   Don't click on links embedded in emails from unknown sources or open suspicious attachments. They could contain a virus that is set to activate upon clicking/opening. They can destroy your files and seriously damage your computer.
